2010 poster for the trotting race Prix D'Amerique Marionnaud featuring a giraffe which leads me to ask,
Can a giraffe trot?
Apparently Giraffes, in common with camels move both legs on one side and then both legs on the other side. In some cases the hind leg starts first so there is a slight lag. This is also called 'Pacing' and it is the first gait observed in young colts. Source http://www.earthlife.net
I understand that Giraffes can reach speeds of up to 35mph which means that in a straight race, at the gallop, the horse would win with the Thoroughbred speed of over 40mph.
The world record time for a trotter is 1:49.3, set by Enough Talk in 2008, 32.94 mph . The world record for a pacer is 1:46.4, set by Holborn Hanover in 2006, 33.83 mph. Source wiki.answers.com
