So you ride horses, maybe you have your own horse you might even earn your living via horses. You're outside for long hours a day and you're leading a healthy lifestyle. Why go green?
Well you'll be helping to save the planet but you'll also be improving your own life as well, listed below are just a few reasons why equestrians should go green:
Recycle and reuse and you'll save money.
Compost that muck heap and you'll have a useful resource to use yourself, give away or sell rather than having to pay to have it carted away.
Be careful with your water usage and your water bill will be less and maybe we'll have access to clean water for longer. According to forecasts by National Geographic 1/3 of the world's people will not have access to clean water by the year 2050 Clean water is a precious resource so take care of it don't waste it or pollute it.
Turn out those yard lights. install solar panels reduce your car journeys and you'll not only be saving money but helping to improve air quality, preserve fuel and reduce greenhouse gases. Cleaner air for you and your horse and less global warming.
Conserve habitats and you'll be helping wildlife. But did you know wildlife can be beneficial to your horse keeping? Birds and bats help to control the insect population so maybe you won't have to use so much fly spray. And some birds and mammals help to control rodents which could save you a fortune in spoiled feeds, damaged rugs etc
Sustainable environmentally friendly horse keeping will make you a good steward of the land, it should improve your pastures and reduce mud.
Help to conserve non-renewable resources by reducing, recyclying and reusing and you'll not only be saving money today but you'll be helping to prevent price increases in the future when resources become rarer.
Use eco-friendly products and you'll be reducing the amount of toxic chemicals that are absorbed by both your own skin and that of your horses. Some of these chemicals are believed to create heath problems so healthier horse and healthier you!
Going green and practising sustainable, environmentally friendly horse keeping will go a long way towards preventing, or, if you're already having difficulties, ending disputes with local authorities over planning issues and it should help to keep the neighbours happy too.
